Turkey Sells Afrin’s Olives to EU
The claims that Turkey processes olive taken from Syria’s Afrin and sells it to the EU countries have been brought into the parliament of Switzerland.
The government of Turkey is accused of harvesting olives in Syria’s Afrin and selling them to the European Union (EU) countries.
In Switzerland, Conservative Democratic Party MP Bernhard Guhl has brought the topic into the parliamentary agenda, the Fox News reported.
According to the Olive Oil Times, Afrin Agricultural Council Deputy Chair Saleh Ibo said that Turkey has produced at least 5,000 tons of olive oil with the olives it took from Afrin area.
“They have also been confiscating the fields and olive groves of people who have had to flee Afrin due to the Turkish state violence in the months since the invasion,” Ibo added.
The real meaning of the ‘Operation Olive Branch’
Turkey conducted a military operation in Syria’s Afrin in 2018, named the “Operation Olive Branch”. By this name, Turkey refers to more than just “bringing peace” to Afrin. Because Afrin, with its olive, olive oil, flour and sugar, supports the cantons and the Kurdish movement.
Then Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said at the time of the operation that “the olives go to the people, the branches go to the terrorists.”
Parliamentary question from HDP
Reports on Afrin’s olives by the Fırat News Agency were published on the El Público newspaper from Spain. Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP ömer Öcalan submitted a parliamentary question to Minister of Agriculture and Food Bekir Pakdemirli on January 2.
Öcalan directed the following questions:
-Are the claims that Turkey brands Afrin’s olive oil as “Turkish olive oil” and sells to the EU countries true?
-If the claims are true, how many tons of olive oil have been brought to Turkey from Afrin to this day? How much of that olive oil was consumed in the domestic market and how much of that was exported?
-Apart from olive and olive oil, which agricultural products are being brought to Turkey from Afrin? What are the types and amounts of those agricultural products? (PT/VK)
